5 Steps to Cure Memory Problems

by Barbara Collins-Myers

The busier we become the more we forget. Activities, chores and errands take up much of our time and energy. Many of us try to remember it all and become overwhelmed. We forget to buy milk, pick up Alyssa from Ballet practice and call Sis on her birthday.

What's the cure for this 21st century dilemma? It's called a master list. However, it's about more than just making the list. Try these five steps to be more productive and reduce your memory problems.

1. Take a spiral notebook and start writing down everything you need to do -- now, next week, yesterday and next month. Just let the pen flow. Carry the notebook with you and add to it continually.

2. Review the list and mark items: E (errand), P (phone), W (write), DH (do at home), DW (do at work). By breaking them down into categories, you'll be able to group tasks, thus accomplishing more.

3. Delegate everything possible. Make household members do their share. Barter with or hire co-workers, neighbor teens, friends or outside service agencies to reduce your load.

4. Prioritize your list. If it's urgent, mark it with a red pen. If it has a deadline, write the date in green.

5. Move some items to your daily to-do list every evening. Check them off as you complete them.

By writing down things to do, you'll reduce the mental clutter swimming around in your head. You'll sleep better, think more clearly and accomplish more.
